Football fans around the world got exactly what they hoped for – drama, tension, and an incredible finale. The 2025 UEFA Champions League final at Munich’s Allianz Arena between Real Madrid and Manchester City became a true war of nerves, with the winner only decided after a penalty shootout.
The match began at a lightning pace. As early as the 15th minute, Manchester City took the lead with a strike from Erling Haaland. However, Real Madrid wouldn’t be Real Madrid if they crumbled. In the second half, in the 68th minute, Vinícius Júnior equalized after a magnificent run by Jude Bellingham.
With the score at 1-1, the teams played more cautiously, and as the match went into extra time, it seemed both sides were more afraid of losing than eager to win. Everything came down to the penalty shootout.
Here, Real’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had his say. The Belgian saved two of City’s penalties, and when captain Nacho converted the decisive spot-kick, he drowned the stadium in a sea of white shirts. The final result – 4:2 in the shootout, and the 16th, record-breaking, title goes to Madrid.
“It’s in our DNA. Never give up,” said Real’s coach Carlo Ancelotti. “This team has an incredible heart. I am proud of every single player.”
Meanwhile, for Pep Guardiola’s men, it was a bitter defeat. Although they controlled large parts of the match, it wasn’t enough to overcome the magic of the royal club. Europe is painted white once again.
